Today, on behalf of the global USAID team, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the Bush family on the passing of President George H.W. Bush. Throughout his long life, President Bush represented the very best of the American spirit, a spirit of both humble generosity as well as indomitable resolve in the face of tyranny. As a young lawyer, it was during the Bush presidency that I first thought of running for office, inspired by the President's unparalleled example of public service and dedication to the ideals of our American democracy. From serving in World War II to being commander-in-chief during the Gulf War, President Bush embodied the American ideal of selfless service to country -- and to the world. He was a visionary defender of democracy, who had the courage and conviction to stand up for liberty and freedom. It was his vision and principled leadership that finally tore down the walls that had held freedom at bay across much of Europe, opening the door for a Europe whole, free, and at peace. Yet for all his historic accomplishments, President Bush also displayed a striking sense of humility, for his achievements came in service of the noble principles of compassion, integrity, and honor. As President Bush himself once said, "Any definition of a successful life must include serving others." With his passing, we at USAID reflect on the life of a public servant, and we recommit ourselves to carrying on his legacy of service, as we stand alongside those around the world who strive for democracy, freedom, and self-reliance.
