This week marks the 15th anniversary of the announcement by President George W. Bush of the creation of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) during the 2003 State of the Union address. At the time, only 50,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa were on HIV/AIDS treatment. Thanks to the generosity of the American people, today more than 13.3 million people are on life-saving anti-retroviral therapy. The United States Agency for International Development remains committed to working towards control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 35 countries and regional programs around the world, and is proud to be a major implementing Agency for PEPFAR.
