Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean of more than 20 million people located within 20 miles of vital sea lanes that carry all of the oil moving from the Persian Gulf to Asia, and half of the world's container shipments. Since 1956, the U.S. Government has been providing development and humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka in the areas of agriculture, environment and natural resources, health, education, business development and trade, good governance, and humanitarian assistance.

USAID’s current program supports the Government of Sri Lanka (GSL) efforts to develop a just society and a prosperous country where all Sri Lankans can enjoy the benefits of its status as an upper middle income country. This includes assisting GSL efforts to strengthen its democratic systems, promote inclusive economic growth, and support marginalized and disaster-affected communities. USAID-funded projects in Sri Lanka align with USAID’s vision to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific, in which all nations are independent, strong, and prosperous.
