Today, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green spoke by phone with the interim President of Venezuela, the Honorable Juan Guaidó. Administrator Green echoed President Trump and Secretary Pompeo in expressing the United States' solidarity with the Venezuelan people and Venezuela's National Assembly, the only legitimate governing body duly elected by Venezuelans. Administrator Green heard from interim President Guaidó about the dire humanitarian situation inside Venezuela, where people lack essential basic necessities, such as food and medical supplies. In response, the Administrator reiterated Secretary Pompeo's announcement that the United States is ready to provide emergency aid throughout Venezuela to help meet this increasing humanitarian need. In addition, Administrator Green reaffirmed the United States' commitment to continue supporting the Venezuelan National Assembly, as well as other key democratic actors like local civil society organizations that are involved in human rights documentation and the independent media.

Administrator Green also underscored the U.S. government's condemnation of Nicolas Maduro, and reaffirmed USAID's commitment to promoting citizen-responsive governance in Venezuela, in pursuit of a Hemisphere of Freedom.

The Administrator and interim President Guaidó closed their conversation with a mutual commitment to work together to help restore dignity, human rights, and democracy in Venezuela.

U.S. officials will continue conversations and coordination with interim President Guaidó's team to create specific plans in the coming days.
