OVERVIEW

The purpose of KCEC is to enhance the capacity of the Afghan carpet industry to meet international market requirements by addressing major constraints in the process of bringing carpets to market. The Afghan carpet industry is Afghanistan’s second largest employer after agriculture. Strengthened by the KCEC, the carpet industry can generate new employment opportunities for women, young people, and both returning refugees and internally displaced Afghans who have carpet-making skills, whether they are in urban, peri-urban, or rural areas.

ACTIVITIES

  • Remedies critical constraints in the Afghan carpet value chain and thereby creates jobs by increasing Afghanistan’s share of the international carpet market.
  • Established a carpet export center near Hamid Karzai International Airport that will provide services to carpet exporters and producers
  • Facilitates carpet producers’ and exporters’ access to finance, matches buyers with carpet producers, and assists in customs clearances and freight forwarding

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Completed and submitted the Milestone 1.10, which included a comprehensive report on KCEC’s participation at January Atlanta International Rug Show and Domotex, Hannover, Germany
  • Completed the second deliverable of Milestone 1.12, registration of 10 international customers and 10 Afghan sellers, including all required supporting documentations
  • Attended and exhibited at Domotex Shanghai, China from March 26 – 28, 2019
  • In February 2019, organized the first regional training for members of Kabul Carpet Association and Afghanistan Carpet Exporters Guild
