Speeches Shim

On track to become the world’s most populous country by 2030, India faces the difficult task of providing its growing population with access to quality health care, potable water, education and clean energy. The U.S. supports India’s efforts to deliver these services as a strategic partner and ally in maintaining regional stability, expanding regional trade and addressing development challenges.

USAID leverages India’s growing human and financial resources through partnerships that catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship to solve critical local and global development challenges. In recent years, USAID established 34 public-private partnerships that leverage $380 million in additional financial resources.

OUR WORK

The United States and India share a peer-to-peer relationship that involves close collaboration to solve development challenges. As agreed in the U.S.-India Joint Statement signed in June 2016, the U.S. and India share common interests in working with partners across Africa and Asia to mitigate the impact of climate change, promote global health and food security and ensure continued regional integration and stability. U.S. assistance in India helps advance this shared agenda by engaging a range of stakeholders to end extreme poverty and increase citizens’ access to quality health care, potable water, education and clean energy.

IMPROVING THE LIVES OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
USAID partners with the Indian Government and the private sector to eliminate preventable child and maternal deaths, create an AIDS- and TB-free generation and achieve universal health coverage. USAID is supporting mother and child health initiatives in six states which are helping 2.8 million pregnant women and 2.6 million newborns to access improved maternal and child health services. USAID is improving health by advancing access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in India’s growing cities. USAID also supports programs preventing gender-based violence and protecting and supporting the disabled population. By promoting innovative teaching approaches and technologies, USAID continues to strengthen reading and learning among primary school boys and girls. USAID is working closely with local partners and state governments to improve reading outcomes for 144,000 children in more than 250 municipal schools.

ADVANCING FOOD SECURITY AND IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Through its clean energy and sustainable forestry programs, USAID collaborates with the Indian Government to advance the country’s transition to a green, energy-secure economy. USAID is working with India’s three largest states to deploy rooftop solar systems, promote energy efficient technologies and improve the management of India’s forests to address climate change and strengthen forestdependent communities. USAID and India are partnering to develop, test and transfer Indian agricultural innovations to strengthen food security in India, Africa and Asia. More than 760,444 farmers in Africa and Asia use improved technologies and climate change-resilient farming techniques introduced by USAID/India. USAID partners with India to train 1,500 agricultural practitioners from 17 countries across Africa and Asia on specialized farming practices that will increase productivity and raise income for farmers.
