Ghana is a low middle income country, with a per capita income of $1,590 and a population of 26.79 million in 2014. Ghana’s poverty rate in 2012 was 24.2 percent, which is a significant reduction from its 2005 rate of 31.9 percent. The service sector is the leading contributor to the economy and accounted for 49.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014, followed by industry at 27.7 percent, and agriculture 22.4 percent. External trade plays a substantial role in Ghana’s economy. In 2014 exports accounted for 39.5 percent of the GDP while imports were 48.9 percent. Ghana’s leading exports include gold and cocoa.
