Supports Congolese health institutions and communities to deliver quality, integrated health services to sustainably improve the health status of the Congolese population.  We support primary health care services in 178 health zones and serve more than 31 million people in nine target provinces: Kasaï Oriental, Kasaï Central, Sankuru, Lomami, Sud Kivu, Haut Lomami, Haut Katanga, Lualaba, Tanganyika.

WHO AFRO Support for Disease Control and Reproductive Health in Africa - World Health Organization - Oct 1, 2011 - Oct 1, 2019, $1,300,000 (annually)

Builds the capacity of the TB Provincial Laboratory in Lubumbashi and Kisangani to conduct culture and sensitivity for tuberculosis (TB) tests and support both the Malaria Advisor and the Immunization Advisor to assist the national programs.

Strengthens country management of health commodities, and provides a full range of technical assistance to ensure the long-term availability of health commodities.

Procures health commodities (family planning, HIV, Malaria, Maternal and Child Health) and essential medicines to support the DRC government to improve the health status of the Congolese population. 

Breakthrough-ACTION  - John Hopkins University Center for Communications Programs - June 1, 2018 - Sept 31, 2023; $24,950,000

Focuses on understanding the determinants of key behaviors and, based on evidence, designs interventions to address behavior change interventions targeting key groups for healthier outcomes. Breakthrough ACTION collaborates with USAID’s Integrated Health Program in Kasai Central, Kasai Oriental, Sankuru, Lomami, Haut Lomami, Lualaba, Haut Katanga, Tanganyika, and Sud Kivu. 

MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

Fistula Care Plus - Engender Health - Dec 2, 2013 - Sept 30, 2019; $74,490,086

Strengthens health system capacity for fistula prevention, detection, treatment, and reintegration. Under the original Fistula Care project from 2008 to 2013, we partnered with seven health centers and hospitals to train 44 doctors and 242 nurses in fistula repair surgery and 802 doctors and nurses in fistula counseling and follow-up care. Today, we  address the backlog of women living with obstetric or traumatic fistula while also increasing the integration of family planning services with fistula and maternal health services as a key component of fistula prevention.

MALARIA

Impact Malaria - Population Services International - February 2018 - February 2023; $3,600,000

Supports the National Malaria Control Program to implement the national malaria diagnostics quality assurance system. It mobilizes the national cadre of expert trainers and national archive of malaria slides to implement training and external quality assurance in laboratories of supported provinces. This activity supports the National Malaria Control Program to identify innovative and cost-effective quality assurance approaches to achieve broad impact. It will improve the quality of services in new provincial laboratories by providing equipment where gaps exist. 

PMI Measure Malaria - University of North Carolina - July 1, 2014 - June 2020; TBD

Provides technical assistance, leadership, and training to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation component of the National Malaria Control Program and the National Health Management Information Systems. It works at central and provincial levels to support the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data for decision-making purposes.

VectorWorks - John Hopkins University - Oct 1, 2014 - Sept 30, 2019; $800,500

Implements durability monitoring of insecticide-treated nets in Sud Ubangi and Mongala provinces. This involves annual data collection and analysis. Local work is organized through the Kinshasa School of Public Health.

VectorLink - Abt Associates - Sept 30, 2017- Sept 29, 2022; $650,000

Helps the DRC’s National Malaria Control Program to achieve universal coverage of Insecticide-Treated Nets among the general population through mass campaigns and continuous distribution (schools, antenatal care and vaccination clinics). VectorLink helps understand the impact (seasonal vector distribution, biting and resting behavior, infectivity rates, and species composition) of the distribution of insecticide-treated nets on mosquitoes that are malaria vectors in conducting entomological monitoring activities in 11 sites in 11 provinces: Kasai Central, Haut Katanga, Sud Kivu, Nord Ubangi, Bas Uele, Tshopo, Kinshasa, Kongo Central, Sankuru, Tanganyika and Mai Ndombe. The entomological surveillance will help improve future decision-making regarding choice of vector control tools.

HIV/AIDS

Integrated HIV/AIDS Project-Kinshasa- The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation -March 1, 2017 - Feb 28, 2022; $24,450,000

Works in five health zones in Kinshasa and provides all HIV interventions such as promotion of prevention, testing, care, treatment, and viral load detection. 

Integrated HIV/AIDS Project-Haut Katanga/Lualaba - Program for Appropriate Technology in Health - March 1, 2017 - Feb 28, 2022; $42,909,404

Supports HIV activities such as testing, care and treatment, and keeps those patients who are in treatment under retention and viral load suppression. They work in 16 zones in total, eight in Haut Katanga and ten in Lualaba. 

Enhancing Linkages and Services for Children affected by HIV AIDS -  Education Development Center -April 28, 2016 - April 27, 2021; $15,838,444

Improves the lives of orphans and vulnerable children and their households in target geographic areas. It focuses on identifying HIV-related orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers, assessing their needs, and responding through direct service or referencing in Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, and Kolwezi. The program reduces economic vulnerability of target households, enhances caregivers and parenting skills, and strengthens referral systems for social and health services, including HIV testing and treatment using local partners and host country institutions.

TUBERCULOSIS

Stop TB Partnership - Stop TB Partnership - Feb 3, 2015 - Sept 30, 2019; $5,000,000

Works toward the elimination of TB as a public health problem, and ultimately to obtain a world free of TB. It ensures that every TB patient has access to effective diagnosis, treatment, and cure; stops transmission of TB; reduces the inequitable social and economic toll of TB; and develops and implement new preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic tools and strategies to stop TB.

POLIO

WHO AFR/SD Support for the Eradication of Polio (Polio Surveillance and Commodities) - Oct 1, 2011- Sept 30, 2019

Improves collection and reporting of national surveillance data, consistent with international standards. The expected results include zero new wild poliovirus cases.

UNICEF Routine and Polio (Umbrella Grant: Polio, EPI) - United Nations Children Funds - Oct 1, 2011 - Sept 30, 2022;  $ 2,700,000

Builds the capacity of the government to prevent polio and increase immunization coverage. The expected results include zero new wild poliovirus cases by December 2019 and at least a 50 percent  reduction in the number of children missed by immunization campaigns.

WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION

UNICEF Maternal and Child Health Umbrella Grant - United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) - Sept 1, 2007 - Sept 30, 2020; TBD

Increases the coverage and utilization of bed nets for malaria prevention. Increases access to potable water for Congolese people through the utilization of low-cost technology and a community-based approach for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of latrines, well drilling, and spring capping. Emphasizes the involvement of women as decision-makers to influence change in their communities. Activities focus on behavior change communication to promote hand-washing with soap, safe water storage and handling, and correct and consistent use of latrines for safe human waste disposal.
