USAID/Zimbabwe

USAID assists Zimbabweans to promote a more accountable and democratic system of governance.  We support the advancement of fundamental freedoms, democratic principles, and participatory decision-making processes, with the goal of improving the lives of all Zimbabweans.

Advancing Constitutionally Driven Reforms

Although the Constitution has been in effect since 2013, key legislation regarding freedoms of the press and assembly and electoral processes have yet to be aligned to it. USAID works to increase awareness of constitutional rights, roles, and responsibilities and advance the constitutional alignment of laws, policies, and procedures through a variety of platforms and dialogues. USAID creates opportunities to foster learning and discussion about the Constitution, including the right to human dignity and personal security, as well as the right to education, health care, water, food, and shelter.

Social Cohesion

USAID aims to create a more secure environment for communities and civic leaders to engage freely in political processes and to contribute to a more democratic system of governance.  USAID builds the resilience of individuals who have experienced intimidation and violence through collaboration with local actors and other donors on analysis, policy dialogue, and legal and medical services.  USAID also provides support to engage communities and local stakeholders in peaceful conflict mitigation and resolution initiatives. To reduce potential triggers of conflict, USAID promotes community reconciliation and trauma healing.

Strengthen Systems of Accountability

USAID strengthens accountability systems by increasing the independence and effectiveness of Parliament; improving democratic electoral processes to reflect better citizen voices; and activating mechanisms for citizen advocacy and oversight. By seeking ways to foster systems of accountability, USAID incorporates active participation and oversight from citizens with the expectation that this will lead to greater transparency and create incentives for government responsiveness. Elections serve as the ultimate accountability tool, so USAID supports electoral reforms and processes to promote credible elections.

Civil Society

Through USAID support, local civil society organizations improve capacity in planning, outreach, human resource and financial management, and monitoring and evaluation. USAID’s goal is to help the people of Zimbabwe, individually and collectively through their chosen associations, to shape and strengthen democratic institutions to make them more responsive and accountable to citizens.
