BANGKOK, THAILAND  The United States Agency for International Development Regional Development Mission for Asia (USAID/RDMA) launched the two-year, $1.9 million Sustainable Fish Asia (SUFIA) project to improve the management of marine biodiversity and fisheries resources in the Southeast Asia and Pacific regions. 

To address the challenges of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices in the project’s regions, SUFIA aims to enhance the capabilities of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs Fisheries (CTI-CFF) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC); and identify private sector  investment in and adoption of sustainable fishing and fair labor practices in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. 

The project is implemented by Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International in concert with SEAFDEC based in Bangkok, Thailand, and CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat based in Manado, Indonesia.

The United States Agency for International Development’s Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) and Inmarsat Global Limited (Inmarsat) haveannounced a new partnership to help commercial fishing crews promote sustainable fishing in Southeast Asia.

The United States Agency for International Development’s Oceans and Fisheries Partnership (USAID Oceans) and Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI), have announced a new partnership for reducing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Through the partnership, they will establish an innovative system for promoting sustainable fisheries and marine biodiversity conservation. Piloted in Bitung, Indonesia, the new electronic regional catch documentation and traceability (CDT) system will help small- and large-scale fisheries promote fair and ethical seafood supply chains and meet regional and international import standards.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is guaranteeing an $8 million Women’s Livelihood Bond that will provide access to credit, market linkages, and affordable goods and services for an estimated 385,000 Southeast Asian women.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety science company, has launched the third annual ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women.

A new report highlights Thailand’s success in reducing the number of malaria cases by 81 percent since 1997, and maps strategies to eliminate the disease in the country by 2024.

Marking World Malaria Day, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Regional Development Mission for Asia and partner RTI International today released a report highlighting Thailand’s dramatic success in slashing the number of malaria cases by 81 percent since 1997. It also makes the business case for an aggressive roadmap to eliminate malaria in the country by 2024.

The U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission to Lao PDR Michael Kleine presented 120,000 mosquito nets to the Deputy Minister of Health, H.E. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phouthone Muongpak during a ceremony in Vientiane on March 10. These mosquito nets will be distributed to families in rural areas of Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Oudomxay, Phongsaly, Salavan, Sayabouly, and Savannakhet provinces to protect them against mosquito borne diseases such as malaria.
