Due to the deteriorating economic and political situation in Venezuela, more than 4 million Venezuelans have fled to neighboring countries. Nearly 1.3 million Venezuelans resided in Colombia as of March 2019, the highest number of Venezuelans in any country in the region.
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick met yesterday with Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath of Curaçao and Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes of Aruba in Washington, D.C. Deputy Administrator Glick discussed the regional impacts of Venezuela's man-made humanitarian crisis, and thanked the Prime Ministers for their countries' support for the thousands of Venezuelans who have fled to Aruba and Curaçao.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green visited Bogota, Colombia May 13-14. On May 13, Administrator Green and President Duque announced an agreement to expand the scope of the two countries' Development Objective Assistance Agreement. USAID's $160 million contribution to this bilateral agreement reaffirms the two countries' continued support and collaboration. Administrator Green and President Duque also met with the Mayor of Ovejas to celebrate the USAID-funded land titling pilot project, which is Colombia's first massive land-formalization and multi-purpose registry project. Land-formalization is a key step to mitigating conflict, strengthening the economy, and reducing inequality in rural areas.
On April 10, U.S. Vice President Michael R. Pence announced nearly $61 million in additional U.S. Government (USG) assistance in response to the Venezuela regional crisis. The assistance includes $13.3 million from USAID/OFDA, $16.2 million from USAID/FFP, and $31.4 million from State/PRM to address needs throughout the region. Vice President Pence made the announcement during a convening of the UN Security Council to discuss the worsening humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
Today, Vice President Pence announced that the United States is providing nearly $61 million in additional humanitarian assistance to support the regional response for the 3.4 million Venezuelans who have fled the man-made crisis in their country. The Vice President recognizes the need to increase support for these vulnerable Venezuelans, and announced the new funding during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council focused on the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
