To support and reinforce the capacity of Yemenis to lead the country’s recovery efforts, these activities work with key local and national institutions across sectors that will be critical as people affected by conflict start rebuilding their lives.
Early Recovery and Rehabilitation (pdf - 544k)
Persistent conflict has weakened the coping capacity and resilience of Yemeni households and communities. The health system is crumbling. Nearly 15 million people lack adequate healthcare, and less than half of all health facilities are fully functional. Millions of children lack reliable access to education, because of widespread displacement, damage to schools and general insecurity. Immediate efforts are needed to mitigate the impact of the current crisis on households and communities while strengthening local institutions and service delivery.
USAID’S RESPONSE
USAID is helping Yemen set the stage for longer-term development by supporting the restoration of maternal and child health services and basic education, and restarting livelihood activities with the Social Fund for Development and the Public Works Program. USAID is also supporting the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism that provides a neutral, transparent clearance and inspection process for vessels arriving in Yemen’s Red Sea ports to facilitate the flow of essential commercial goods.
