Today, the United States announced more than $119 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the people of Iraq. The United States Government has now provided more than $1.4 billion in humanitarian assistance for the Iraq crisis since fiscal year 2014.
With this new assistance, the United States is providing additional emergency food and nutrition assistance, safe drinking water, hygiene kits, improved sanitation, emergency shelter, and protection for Iraqis who have been displaced. We are also providing life-saving medical care, including ambulances, medicine, and continued support for three field hospitals that are treating trauma patients.
Iraq faces the immense challenge of restoring essential services and rebuilding its infrastructure. More than one million people from Mosul have been displaced by ISIS' brutal rule and the subsequent nine-month military operation-led by the Iraqi Security Forces-to liberate Iraq's second largest city. The coming months ahead will be difficult until these hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians are able to return safely to their homes.
As the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to the Iraq crisis, the United States remains committed to supporting the Iraqi people during their time of need. We commend the significant humanitarian contributions made by Coalition members to date, and encourage them and other donors to continue to support humanitarian efforts in Iraq.
