There is no better time than the present to reaffirm USAID’s support for Nigeria. USAID recognizes the aspirations of the Nigerian people to build a more prosperous country, one founded on greater stability and transparent, responsive governance and one that provides access to essential services for all. USAID is inspired by the great opportunities that Nigeria has at hand to enable its dynamic private sector and nurture the talents of its diverse population.
On August 20, 2020, the U.S. government, through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), donated 3.1 million bed nets in Nigeria’s Zamfara State as part of a national campaign to provide enough nets for every Nigerian to be protected from the deadly disease every night. The PMI program in Nigeria is jointly implemented by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in coordination with the Government of Nigeria.
As part of its efforts to deepen private sector involvement in Nigeria’s health sector, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) accepted a contribution from a leading indigenous oil firm Belemaoil Producing Nigeria Limited today to support USAID’s activities to eradicate HIV and AIDS in Akwa Ibom State. Under an agreement signed on August 13, 2020, Belemaoil will contribute to the provision of 75,000 rapid test kits to Akwa Ibom state government through USAID’s HIV/AIDS program. The kits will specifically be used to test high risk adolescents and young women as well as children to prevent mother-to-child transmission and help health clinics improve antenatal services.
Abuja – On August 11, 2020, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Stephen M. Haykin joined Adamawa State First Lad Hajiya Lami Ahmadu Finitri, at the virtual launch of a new activity designed to protect children and their households made vulnerable or orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria’s Adamawa State. The activity was recently launched in Bauchi State as well.
U.S. Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard officially handed over 200 brand-new, leading edge ventilators to the Nigerian Minister of Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire to support the government’s efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic at an August 11, 2020 ceremony at the Abuja Premier Medical Warehouse.
