Yesterday, USAID Administrator Mark Green and Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump met women entrepreneurs at a cocoa farm in Adzope, Côte d'Ivoire to discuss the Women's Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, and overcoming economic challenges that women face. The delegation announced a renewed public-private partnership through USAID's W-GDP fund and the World Cocoa Foundation for $2 million, which will catalyze private sector investment in women workers of the cocoa industry.

They met with religious leaders representing the diverse faiths of those who perished in the crash, laid a wreath, and observed a moment of silence.

Today, USAID Administrator Mark Green and Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump met with businesswomen in the coffee industry at Dumerso Coffee in Addis Ababa to discuss opportunities and challenges women entrepreneurs face in Ethiopia. During the meeting, Ms. Trump expressed the United States' support for improving opportunities for women to start and grow their businesses in Ethiopia. Ms. Trump announced a new award -- through the Women's Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative -- for Azalech Coffee Roasting, Grinding and Packaging, owned by Azalech Tesfaye. The loan was made possible through a joint U.S.- and Swedish- funded loan guarantee program designed to increase access to finance for women entrepreneurs in Ethiopia. The delegation also participated in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green met with representatives of partner countries and organizations during the World Bank Spring Meetings. He discussed support for governments, civil society, and the private sector in partner countries on their journey to self-reliance; actions to prevent sexual exploitation, trafficking and abuse in the aid sector; stabilization and development in the Sahel; the humanitarian response to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh; assistance to vulnerable Venezuelans who have fled to neighboring countries to escape repression and deprivation; the response to the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo; support for efforts to prevent future humanitarian crises; economic and governance reforms in developing countries; women's economic empowerment; and partnerships with the private sector.

On April 11, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green met with the President of the Central African Republic (CAR), the Honorable Faustin-Archange Touadera. The Administrator expressed hope that the February 2019 Peace Agreement will provide a path to lasting peace in the CAR. The Administrator acknowledged the President's efforts to address his country's development challenges, and noted his desire to see peace and stability in the CAR.

They discussed Somalia's efforts to mobilize greater domestic revenue; important legislation pending in the Somali Parliament, including bills regarding elections and the Auditor General; and how USAID will continue to harness the dynamism of Somalia's private sector and its vast potential for economic growth, through education, the management of natural resources, and the creation of employment.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green will travel to Ethiopia and Côte d'Ivoire April 14-17. Administrator Green will accompany Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump to promote the Women's Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, a White House-led, whole-of-Government approach to advance global women's economic empowerment with a goal of reaching 50 million women in developing countries by 2025. USAID oversees the W-GDP Fund, which was established to support and scale up innovative programs that advance women's economic empowerment in support of the W-GDP.

And we believe, as the lead agency in development, as Americans, that that notion is cooked into our DNA. So, what we believe is, where a country has taken on the tough choices in doing the difficult things that they need to do to become self-reliant and hopefully prosperous, well, we should walk with them along the way. And the Policy Framework is the connective tissue between that notion and the actual work that we do, day in and day out.

Today, Vice President Pence announced that the United States is providing nearly $61 million in additional humanitarian assistance to support the regional response for the 3.4 million Venezuelans who have fled the man-made crisis in their country. The Vice President recognizes the need to increase support for these vulnerable Venezuelans, and announced the new funding during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council focused on the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Europe and Eurasia Brock Bierman will travel to Minsk, Belarus April 10-11. During his visit, Assistant Administrator Bierman will deliver remarks at the 2019 AID-VENTURE Day International Forum, an annual international conference supported by USAID to nurture startups and expand venture investments in Belarus. While in Minsk, he will also meet with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, USAID partners, representatives of civil society, and other international donors.

Remarks

In total, the Fiscal Year 2020 request for USAID, fully and partially-managed accounts, is approximately $19.2 billion. It represents 2.4 billion, or 14 percent, more than requested last year. I think the message of this request is straightforward, as has been alluded to. We attempt to balance fiscal responsibility here at home with our leadership role and national security imperatives on the world stage.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Counselor Chris Milligan will travel to Maputo, Mozambique on April 5. While in Mozambique, Counselor Milligan will also visit Beira, one of the areas hit hardest by Cyclone Idai, and see the U.S. Government's response to the cyclone, which caused catastrophic flooding, killed hundreds of people, and affected hundreds of thousands of others in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Today, the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced nearly $33 million in additional humanitarian assistance to meet the urgent needs caused by Cyclone Idai and related flooding, including nearly $31 million for the people of Mozambique and over $2 million for the people of Zimbabwe.
