USAID Administrator Mark Green visited the Republic of Mozambique from June 18-20, 2019. He participated in the U.S. Government Delegation to the 12th U.S.-Africa Business Summit sponsored by the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) in Maputo.  The Administrator also met with business leaders and officials from the Government of Mozambique to discuss challenges and opportunities as the country advances along its Journey to Self-Reliance. Finally, he traveled to Beira, the capital of Sofala Province, to inspect sites damaged by Cyclone Idai and met with people affected by the disaster.

On June 19, 2019, Administrator Green delivered remarks on the opening day of the CCA Summit.  With Deputy Secretary of Commerce Karen Dunn Kelley, the Administrator launched Prosper Africa, the Trump Administration’s initiative to increase two-way trade between the United States and countries on the continent.  

The Administrator and the Deputy Secretary also met with President of Mozambique Felipe Nyusi.  The Administrator commended the President’s commitment to securing a lasting peace in Mozambique and attracting foreign direct investment. He appealed to the President to redouble his Government’s efforts to retain HIV-positive patients on life-saving anti-retroviral treatment in collaboration with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The Administrator discussed preserving biodiversity with the International Conservation Caucus Foundation and the Chair of the Conservation Caucus of the Mozambican Parliament, and met with senior executives of American corporations that are making major investments on the African continent. He explained USAID’s new Private-Sector Engagement Policy and vision for procurement reform, both of which will make it easier for commercial firms to work in partnership with tue Agency.

On June 20, 2019, Administrator Green traveled to Beira to meet with the Governor of Sofala Province and other local officials, USAID partners, and the private sector to discuss the impact of Cyclone Idai and efforts to recover from the storm. While in Beira, he met with women uprooted by the cyclone, including smallholder farmers; visited a health center damaged by the storm, where PEPFAR is helping to restore services; and toured the warehouse to which USAID delivered tons of emergency food aid in the immediate aftermath of Idai.  The United States has contributed more than $80 million to relief and recovery in response to Cyclone Idai so far.
