In February 2003, USAID’s Displaced Children and Orphans Fund (DCOF) awarded s grant under the agreement number EEE-A-00-03-00019-00 for an NGO Consortium for the Psychosocial Care and Protection of Children to assist particularly vulnerable Afghan children, including orphans, disabled children, working children, and former child soldiers. In August 2004, USAID signed a follow-on three year extension, with a total TEC of $6.2 million, to continue this project’s support to the communities in delivering and managing their own services and advocating locally and nationally for their children’s needs and safety. In FY 2007, the last year of the project, the consortium will continue to work with local communities and government ministries in three regions, in central region, in the southern region, and the northeast region, to identify threats to the physical, psychological and social wellbeing of children, identify and assist particular vulnerable children, and advocate for government action on child protection issues.
