I recently visited Trinidad and Tobago and met with government leaders to discuss the situation in Venezuela and the importance of rule of law and security matters. I met with local leaders and the U.S. Embassy’s International Woman of Courage award-recipient Sensei Marva John Logan to reaffirm the importance of programs aimed at Countering Violent Extremism efforts to promote safety and security. Community outreach programs like these help encourage youth development as alternatives to crime and violence. We are also proud to have supported community-level involvement to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Trinidad and Tobago. This makes a real difference in the lives of those impacted. I toured a Children and Family Court once supported by USAID that is now sustained entirely by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, an important example of USAID's commitment to the journey to self-reliance. I was honored to meet brave Venezuelans who fled their country and inspired by their stories. USAID is providing 1.6 million dollars to support Venezuelans in Trinidad and Tobago and the local communities generously hosting them. I reaffirm the Unites States' commitment to help Venezuelans in their quest for freedom and democracy. I believe it is important to strengthen ties in our region so I was proud to visit the Caribbean to reaffirm U.S. commitment to these important nations.
