Selma Votes in Tunisia

Speeches Shim

This is the story of Selma Sbissi, a woman from a rural village in south Tunisia, who became empowered to vote when she met Awatef, a civic education ambassador. USAID trained and deployed female civic ambassadors to encourage women to register and vote in Tunisia's first free municipal elections, held in 2018. USAID reached more than 7,000 rural women during voter registration and 27,000 during the mobilization. Nearly 70 percent of the women reached reported that they voted, far exceeding the national average of 35 percent.
