While visiting Saint Lucia I met with Prime Minister Allen Chastanet to discuss our bilateral relationship with St. Lucia and how to strengthen economic prosperity, youth development, education, and resiliency. We also discussed our mutual concern about the dire situation in Venezuela. As I participated in a volunteer cleanup day to protect communities against mosquitoes that carry Zika virus, I was impressed by the St. Lucia Red Cross Zika Program. I also met with organizations working on disaster response and risk reduction for hurricane preparedness. During my trip I was pleased to announce 2.4 million dollars to strengthen basic education and research throughout the Caribbean. My trip helped reaffirm USAID's support of the U.S. Caribbean 2020 Strategy for Engagement under the U.S.-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act of 2016 (H.R. 4939) to advance our shared security, development, and prosperity goals in the Caribbean.
