Good afternoon everyone.

I am honored to join you here today to celebrate the incredible efforts of the USAID-Walmart partnership and the Creating Economic Opportunities project. These investments will go a long way to support women-owned small and medium sized enterprises in Guatemala.

I want to highlight the importance of women’s economic empowerment at USAID, and touch on why engaging the private sector is important, particularly in Guatemala. And then highlight why this partnership is so important in achieving both those goals.

Women’s economic empowerment has long been a priority at USAID. We believe that in order for societies to be more peaceful and prosperous, women must be able to fully participate in the global economy. Some of the biggest returns on investment on behalf of the American people result from investments in women’s economic empowerment. Empowering women spurs broader economic growth, stymies extreme poverty, and ultimately contributes to global peace and stability.

Similarly, USAID recognizes that private enterprise is the most powerful engine for lifting people out of poverty. That’s why engaging the private sector is so important. Bringing private capital to the table is the best solution to achieve sustained impact long after USAID’s support has ended.

Small and medium-sized enterprises, or SMEs, play a significant role in the Guatemalan economy. They provide essential goods and services and generate more than 80% of the country’s employment. The partnership between USAID and Walmart will help women-owned businesses grow sustainably and provide stable employment in Guatemala.

I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the leadership of Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump for championing the W-GDP initiative. W-GDP brings new energy and focus to women’s economic empowerment around the world. Through the W-GDP Fund at USAID, we are investing in partnerships with the private sector, locally-led organizations, and local host governments to help women achieve their full economic potential.

The additional funds that this initiative brings to Guatemala will allow USAID and Walmart to support an even greater number of SMEs that will create new investment and employment opportunities for years to come.

I have served in leadership roles in business and the US Government, and this partnership is a great example of what we can accomplish when the public and private sectors join together to break down the barriers that prevent women from fully participating in the global economy.

I look forward to seeing what this partnership, as well as other W-GDP partnerships, achieve in the near future.

Buenas tardes. Es un gran honor acompañarlos para celebrar los increíbles esfuerzos de la alianza USAID Walmart y del Proyecto de USAID Creando Oportunidades Económicas. Estas inversiones contribuirán al crecimiento de las pequeñas y medianas empresas o PyMEs (PEE-mess) de propiedad y lideradas por mujeres.

Quiero resaltar la importancia de empoderar económicamente a las mujeres en USAID y mencionar por qué es importante involucrar al sector privado, particularmente en Guatemala. Y luego quiero resaltar por qué esta alianza es tan importante para lograr ambos objetivos.

El empoderamiento económico de las mujeres es, y siempre ha sido, una prioridad fundamental en USAID. Creemos que para que las sociedades sean más pacíficas y prósperas, las mujeres deben participar plenamente en la economía mundial.

El retorno a nuestra inversión es mayor cuando se empodera económicamente a la mujer. Empoderar a las mujeres estimula un crecimiento económico mucho más amplio, impide la pobreza extrema, y contribuye a la paz y a la estabilidad alrededor del mundo.

Asimismo, USAID reconoce que la empresa privada es el motor más poderoso para combatir la pobreza. Trabajar juntos con el sector privado es la mejor solución para lograr un impacto sostenible y a largo plazo.

Hemos visto que en Guatemala las PyMEs proporcionan bienes y servicios esenciales y generan más del 80 por ciento del empleo del país. La alianza entre USAID y Walmart ayudará a que las empresas de propiedad de mujeres crezcan de manera sostenible y proporcionen más empleo.

Además, quisiera reconocer el liderazgo de la Asesora del Presidente de los Estados Unidos, señora Ivanka Trump, por liderar la Iniciativa Global del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo y Prosperidad de las Mujeres.

Esta iniciativa aporta nueva energía y prioriza el empoderamiento económico de las mujeres en todo el mundo. Estamos invirtiendo en alianzas con el sector privado, organizaciones locales y gobiernos anfitriones para ayudar a que las mujeres alcancen su máximo potencial económico.

Los fondos adicionales que esta iniciativa aporta a Guatemala permitirán a USAID y Walmart apoyar a un mayor número de PyMEs, creando nuevas oportunidades de inversión y empleo en los años que vienen.

He ocupado puestos de liderazgo en el sector público y privado, y esta alianza es un gran ejemplo de lo que podemos lograr cuando ambos sectores se unen. Juntos podemos derribar las barreras que impiden que las mujeres participen plenamente en la economía global.

Espero ver lo que esta alianza, así como otras alianzas de esta Iniciativa del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo y Prosperidad de las Mujeres, lograrán en un futuro próximo. Muchas gracias.
