This week U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Administrator John Barsa will travel to Beirut, Lebanon, where catastrophic explosions at the Port of Beirut killed nearly 150 people and injured thousands more and devastated the city center.

While in Lebanon, Acting Administrator Barsa will observe current USAID disaster response efforts and assess the situation on the ground.

He will meet with the USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team, which deployed to Beirut on August 7 to lead U.S. humanitarian response efforts. This elite team of disaster experts is working with humanitarian partners on the ground to assess damage, identify humanitarian needs, and coordinate efforts to deliver immediate assistance.

Acting Administrator Barsa will also visit USAID partners who are delivering critical emergency assistance, including the U.N. World Food Program, which USAID is supporting to provide food assistance to support 300,000 people affected by this disaster.

During his visit, USAID relief supplies that are being transported by the U.S. military will also arrive in Beirut. These supplies include emergency medical kits that will support up to 60,000 people for three months, and contain medicines and medical supplies, such as bandages, gauze, examination gloves, thermometers, and syringes; designed to enable local hospitals to address the critical medical needs of the victims of the explosion.
