Through this project, USAID supported the completion of the Gomal Zam Dam, a multipurpose facility located in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) near the border with Afghanistan. USAID funded completion of the dam, erection of electricity transmission lines, and the construction of the hydropower plant. This project aimed to increase power generation capacity in the country, protect downstream communities from flooding, and store water for irrigation of farmland near the dam.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the Gomal Zam Dam Project is to mitigate Pakistan's energy shortage by adding 17.4 megawatts to the national power grid through the construction of Gomal Zam Dam.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
Fund and monitor the construction of civil, mechanical, and electrical components of the Gomal Zam Dam, including a 125meter roller compacted concrete dam; a 54kilometer transmission line, a 1.14 million acrefeet reservoir, a powerhouse, and a switch yard.
RESULTS TO DATE

The main dam and spillway constructed, tested, and have begun operations.

A 54 kilometer double circuit 132 kilovolt transmission line constructed to deliver power from the dam to Tank Power Station.

A powerhouse and switchyard constructed, adding 17.4 megawatts of power generation capacity to the national grid. This amount of power is sufficient to supply electricity to 39,000 families. Reservoir filled to 90 (out of planned 96) meters.
