U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson joined an HIV self-testing outreach campaign at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region, which is implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in support of the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS).

As we know, wildlife crime is pushing some of the world’s most iconic species toward extinction while driving a lucrative criminal industry that fuels instability in countries around the world. Wildlife crime is a critical threat to economic development. It undermines regional security, threatens legitimate economies, and undercuts our efforts to end extreme poverty. In Namibia, wildlife is an important cultural and economic asset, contributing significantly to the tourism sector and sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people.

Rural Women Benefit from Public Speaking Workshop under  USAID’s Combating Wildlife Crime Program

As primary providers of water, food and energy at the household and community levels, women are often highly dependent on natural resources, including wildlife, for their livelihoods.  On November 14, 2018, U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson participated in a public speaking training workshop for women from four different conservancies in the Zambezi Region.  The workshop was sponsored by the Combating Wildlife Crime in Namibia and the Kavango-Zambezi Area (KAZA) program, which is funded by the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  The workshop was hosted at the Sikunga Conservancy near Katima Mulilo, and facilitated by Janet Matota from Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC).

Through the leadership of the Honorable Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Bernard Haufiku, Namibia has made great strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS, establishing itself as a global leader. The recent NAMPHIA data are clear testimony to this great achievement – and indeed:  Namibia is very close to reaching epidemic control and closer than ever to achieving an AIDS- free generation.

The Katutura NAPPA Clinic offers a range of sexual and reproductive health needs, including family planning, pregnancy tests and counseling, cervical cancer screening, antenatal care, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) screening and HIV testing and treatment.
