BACKGROUND

The U.S. Bureau of the Census has an existing Interagency Agreement with USAID at the global level to provide technical assistance to National Statistical Organizations in the preparation, implementation, analysis and dissemination of national population and housing censuses.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In Mozambique, USAID funded the U.S. Bureau of the Census with $1,057,000 to provide technical assistance to Instituto Nacional de Estatistica (INE), beginning in September 2014 and extending through the completion of final census products and population projections anticipated in 2020. The technical support package offered through US Census Bureau to INE comprises 16 on-site missions intended to develop and further strengthen INE capacity to complete census cartography, ensure quality, establish analytical systems and produce high-quality demographic products.

EXPECTED RESULTS/IMPACTS

As of November 2019, the project has completed 15 of 16 anticipated activities, including production editing of census results, support for data dissemination and generation of national and provincial population projections and demographic analyses. If the full work plan is completed under-budget, additional activities will be added to support thematic analyses of census data. Possible topics of interest include sub-district mapping of reported mortality and triangulation with modeled estimates of HIV burden.
