BACKGROUND

Malaria is considered the most important public health problem in Mozambique. It accounts for nearly one third of all deaths and 42% of deaths in children less than five years old. Although malaria prevalence has decreased in all provinces, the country continues to face challenges that have slowed the progress of key malaria prevention and treatment interventions. 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

VectorLink supports Mozambique’s efforts to plan and implement safe, cost-effective and sustainable indoor residual spraying (IRS) programs and other proven life-saving malaria vector control interventions with the overall goal of reducing the malaria.  It focuses much of its community district level activities in Zambézia and Nampula, but also provides technical support to the government’s national IRS program. Activities include support for the national IRS program in terms of training and supplies; free routine ITN distributions of insecticide-treated nets (ITN) to pregnant women and to children; procurement and distribution of rapid diagnostic tests to all levels of the health system; provision of intermittent preventive treatment of pregnant women; community awareness campaigns; and revitalization of the community health worker program.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND IMPACTS

• Achieve at least 85% spray coverage of targeted structures in the five districts.
• Improved efficiencies in cost and operations in the national IRS program.
• Increased quality of national and provincial level entomological monitoring and IRS capacity building.
• Ensure safe and correct insecticide application.
