Over the past twenty years, Madagascar has made significant progress towards reducing child deaths (under-five
child mortality is estimated at approximately 50 per 1,000 live births), however progress on reducing maternal
mortality, which stands at 353 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, has been much slower. Today, 10
women die each day as a result of pregnancy or birth –related complications. In addition, 100 children die each
day from preventable causes.
