USAID Laos Counter Trafficking In Persons (USAID Laos CTIP), a five-year project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, works to reduce the vulnerability to human trafficking among targeted populations in the Lao PDR by supporting vocational training and employment opportunities of targeted vulnerable populations.

Lao PDR is a source and to a lesser extent, a transit and destination country for women, children and men subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor. Lao trafficking victims, especially from the southern region of the country, are often migrants seeking opportunities abroad who then experience labor or sexual exploitation in destination countries—most often Thailand, as well as Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Japan.

REDUCING VULNERABILITY

USAID Laos CTIP works with law enforcement official to reduce the vulnerability to human trafficking among targeted populations in the Lao PDR by supporting vocational training and employment opportunities of vulnerable populations, particularly survivors of human trafficking to prevent their re-trafficking. These efforts will in turn showcase a model of prevention and protection for the Government of Lao PDR to learn from, support and sustain as it builds its response to counter human trafficking through the implementation of related national laws, policies and programs, as well as providing high quality support services to trafficked persons. The USAID Laos CTIP approach is based on consultations with the Government of Lao PDR and complements other ongoing government initiatives to respond to human trafficking.

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES

The USAID Laos Counter Trafficking in Persons activity:

  • Strengthens Government of Lao PDR to lead anti-human trafficking efforts
  • Increases access to economic opportunities and employment among target vulnerable populations
  • Increases access to support and services among trafficked persons

PARTNER: USAID partners with Winrock International to support the Government of Laos to lead its own anti-human trafficking efforts in the Lao PDR.
