U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick traveled to the Republic of Hungary from November 24 to 27, 2019.

Deputy Administrator Glick delivered remarks at the Second International Conference on Christian Persecution in Budapest.  The Deputy Administrator discussed the cooperation between the Hungarian Government and USAID to help rehabilitate the towns of Qaraqosh and Sinjar in Northern Iraq so that the Christian and Yezidi communities who were the victims of the genocide perpetrated by ISIS can return home.  In addition, the Deputy Administrator highlighted the need for the international community to respond to, and confront, violations of religious freedom wherever they take place around the globe.  She cited the examples of the Uighurs in the People's Republic of China, the Rohingya in Burma, Christians in Nigeria, and resurgent anti-Semitism worldwide, including in Europe.

While in Budapest, Deputy Administrator Glick met with the Honorable Péter Szijjártó, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Tristan Azbej, Hungarian Secretary of State for Aid to Persecuted Christians; and Gábor Márki, Director of the Hungary Helps Program.

She met with Jewish organizations including Mazsihiz, the JDC, and Balint Haz, the Jewish Community Center, and toured the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Center.

Deputy Administrator Glick met with the USAID regional Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) in Budapest, which helps manage the Agency's humanitarian aid in Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, and Iraq.
