About Yemen

As a result of the ongoing civil war, Yemen is suffering the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.

USAID provides humanitarian assistance to Yemenis in need, ensuring that the most vulnerable receive lifesaving assistance throughout the humanitarian crisis. Through the offices of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and Food for Peace, USAID supports interventions including emergency food assistance, medical treatment and vaccination support for children, emergency obstetric services for women, blankets and household goods for displaced families, and hygiene kits and water treatment supplies to reduce the spread of disease.

While humanitarian assistance is crucial, it will not rebuild key social and economic institutions or foster Yemen's future resilience. USAID therefore relaunched development assistance support to Yemen in 2017 to complement our humanitarian assistance efforts. Development assistance activities aim to strengthen the ability of Yemeni institutions to meet citizens needs and build a stronger foundation for durable peace and prosperity. USAID's approach involves working with the Republic of Yemen Government, development partners, the private sector, and civil society by providing greater access to basic social services and economic opportunities, building more responsive local and national institutions, and supporting conflict mitigation at the local level. The programs are highly adaptable to respond to rapidly changing conditions and needs.
