It gives me great pleasure in joining you to commission the water utility at Lorengelup, in central Turkana. This is one of the many activities that USAID is supporting in the region. We are proud to be part of the support for the development of this particular water system that will enable more than 5,500 people to access water.  Lack of access to safe water and sanitation services has direct health implications. Globally, more than 800,000 children die from diarrhea every year. Most of these deaths can be prevented through access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, and good hygiene.

Today, we’re here to learn more about Providing For Health (P4H) as a global network, to celebrate Cambodia’s achievements to date, to identify future needs and gaps in programming, and to discuss areas for collaboration in the future. In the move towards UHC, much has been accomplished.

USAID is committed to providing access to quality education for all children, regardless of their disabilities and social status, around the world. In Cambodia, we have integrated inclusive education as part of our broader support to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport focusing on early grade reading through the All Children Reading Cambodia project.

First, I am impressed every day by the skill, professionalism, but, most of all, dedication of our team all around the world. From our Foreign Service Nationals, to our staff in the field, to those of you here at headquarters: you -- all of you -- are the principle reason why USAID is a vital tool in American global leadership. Not the buildings, the budgets, not even our most innovative programs. Really and truly, it's your skills and your passion, what you bring to your job each and every day, that's really what does the most to lift lives in troubled lands all around the world.

So, as many of us know, there have been some tremendous progress in maternal and child health over the past two decades thanks in part to the Millennium and Sustainable Development Goals.  However a huge challenge remains.  For example, according to a recent report, 30 million newborns are expected to die between now and 2030.  That's a shocking number, 30 million newborn.  Tackling this challenge and the other SDGs will require new tools, partnerships, and innovation to fill the estimated $2.5 annual -- $2.5 trillion annual investment gap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

I am pleased to be here today. Congratulations members of the 12th parliament on your election and nomination to serve the people of Kenya. This is something to be proud of -- public service is a great honor and responsibility. At USAID, we have been pleased to partner with Kenya Women Parliamentary Association -- KEWOPA -- an organization committed to empowering women to reach their political potential, no matter which party they belong too. Women’s participation, after all, is not a partisan issue.

MR. MCCLESKEY: So, we've got a limited amount of time because he's got to get to a dinner with the Ambassador. But I thought that it might be useful ahead of our field trip tomorrow and building on today, to pull back for a moment - here on the record. And address the question that I was asking myself when we woke up earlier this morning, why are we here?

And we've got, obviously, [Senior USAID Officials] here as well, they can chime in on background if there's some more specific --

Over the next two days, we look forward to discussing the exceptional progress Bangladesh has made in many key development sectors and what we can do to build on this progress to ensure that growth is inclusive and leaves no one behind.

It is no secret that Bangladesh made outstanding progress on key Millennium Development Goals and we are confident that similar progress is possible under the Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, Bangladesh has already shown leadership on the SDGs and has been impressively proactive in incorporating the SDGs into its 7th Five Year Plan and other budget and strategic planning efforts.
