United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick traveled to New York for the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to meet with a variety of private-sector and government leaders from September 22 to September 28, 2019.

On September 22, Deputy Administrator Glick participated in a panel with Health and Development Ministers from several African countries to discuss strategies for improving health outcomes to drive economic growth on the African Continent.

On September 23, Deputy Administrator Glick attended a briefing, hosted by the Swedish Mission to the United Nations (UN), on the response by UN agencies and donor nations to the ongoing Venezuela regional crisis.  Following the briefing, Deputy Administrator Glick attended a luncheon with private-sector and government partners on the launch of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which will come into existence as of October 1.  She highlighted the important collaborative role USAID will play in ensuring that future DFC transactions focus on mobilizing private capital and decreasing reliance on grant-based aid. Later, Deputy Administrator Glick attended a roundtable on protecting children in crisis, where she discussed USAID's ongoing role in funding various programs globally that strengthen the capacities and preserve the dignity of children and their families.  Deputy Administrator Glick held discussions with representatives from the National Basketball Association (NBA) on progress made on the partnership between USAID and the NBA to encourage social change and youth development through the power of sport, particularly in Africa. Finally, Deputy Administrator Glick met with Dr. Seth Berkley, the Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to discuss further expanding the reach of new and underutilized vaccines.

On September 24, Deputy Administrator Glick attended a roundtable hosted by Women's World Banking and the Visa Foundation to provide USAID's perspective on opportunities to accelerate country-specific solutions to build financial security and prosperity for women, their families, and communities.  Following the roundtable, Deputy Administrator Glick met with the Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom, Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, to discuss continued joint cooperation between USAID and DFID on increasing private-sector engagement and the continued pursuit of the Journey to Self-Reliance.  Deputy Administrator Glick then met with the President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the Honorable Agnes Kalibata, to discuss how USAID is assisting AGRA programs that promote food security, resilience, and trade across Africa. Deputy Administrator Glick attended the Concordia Annual Summit's celebration of the enactment of the Better Utilization of Investment Leading to Development (BUILD) Act and the DFC's upcoming launch. There, she expressed appreciation for the bi-partisan support for the Act, and summarized the DFC's guiding principles for success:  maximizing development impact, the mobilization of private capital, close collaboration with USAID, additionality, and the promotion of self-reliance.

On September 25, Deputy Administrator Glick attended a high-level breakfast of the Humanitarian Investing Initiative of the World Economic Forum, which USAID joined to galvanize support for innovative financial approaches that improve the efficiency of humanitarian assistance in fragile contexts.   The Deputy Administrator later joined the LEGO Foundation and the Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) within the U.S. Department of State to announce $24.5 million in joint funding for Education Cannot Wait, which will deliver safe, free, and quality education to youth in crisis zones.  The announcement showcases the potential of working with the private sector to increase the effectiveness as the world's single-largest donor of both development and humanitarian assistance and leverage the generosity of the American people. 

On September 26, Deputy Administrator Glick participated in an event on ending sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment in aid programs, hosted by the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD-DAC), where she highlighted USAID's approaches to prevent and combat abuses in the development community.  Deputy Administrator Glick met with Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU),  to continue discussions on increasing collaboration between USAID and ITU on connectivity and information and communications technology (ICT).  Later, Deputy Administrator Glick chaired the Digital Public Goods Roundtable hosted by the Digital Impact Alliance. She talked with global innovators about their projects, and shared USAID's vision for the creation of transparent, country-level policies and strategies on data and ICT. 

On September 27, Deputy Administrator Glick met with leaders at IBM THINKLab in Yorktown, New York, to discuss the latest breakthroughs in weather, agricultural, digital, and other technologies.  They also spoke about the potential to build partnerships that could strengthen USAID's ability to help governments, civil society, and the private sector in our partner countries on their Journey to Self-Reliance.
