Video Transcript
“Hello. My name is Harisoa Ravaomanalina. I am a Botanist and Anatomist by training, and a Teacher and Researcher at the University of Antananarivo.”
In 2018, Dr. Ravaomanalina was selected to receive a research grant from the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program.
The PEER program supports the research of scientists in developing countries.
Dr. Ravaomanalina’s project is to build a reference collection for Malagasy rosewood, palissander, and ebony.
“My specialty is the identification of rosewood, palissander, and ebony woods. Madagascar does not yet have a reference collection for these woods.”
Dr. Ravaomanalina serves as a example for other women pursuing a career in science.
“Girls are very interested in science. For example, 70 percent of the students in our department are girls. In Madagascar, everything is possible if you have the willpower. You can always succeed. It is possible for girls too. So, girls can make a big change to the scientific world.”
