The following is attributable to Acting Spokersperson Pooja Jhunjhunwala:
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green met with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, today in New York to discuss the upcoming U.S.-WHO Strategic Dialogue; collaboration on the Director-General's Transformation Agenda for the WHO; improved administration of grants; plans to strengthen the WHO's external partnerships, including with the private sector; and reforms on cost-effectiveness.
Administrator Green thanked the Director-General for the sustained courage and commitment of the WHO staff members who are working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the frontlines of the response to Ebola, often for extended periods under difficult conditions. In addition, the Administrator and the Director-General discussed how best to support the Government of the DRC and its partners to implement activities to end the outbreak, including by building trust among affected communities. Administrator Green restated the support of the United States for the WHO's efforts to work with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania on compliance with the International Health Regulations (2005) and cooperation with the global community regarding possible Ebola cases.
Finally, Administrator Green expressed appreciation for the WHO's recent global consultation process to develop a new 2030 Roadmap for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Administrator Green reaffirmed support for the Africa Group's request for the new Roadmap and an accompanying resolution to be part of the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the WHO Executive Board in January 2020.
