On behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development, I offer my sincere condolences to the people of Tunisia on the passing of President Beji Caid Essebsi.

President Caid Essebsi was the stabilizing force who led Tunisia through the early challenges of its transition to democracy. He was a tireless champion for the growth and prosperity of his country and its people. President Caid Essebsi's leadership has been a pillar upon which Tunisia has grown.

I was honored to serve as an observer during the 2014 Tunisian elections. President Caid Essebsi will be remembered as his country's first democratically elected President, a statesman who laid the foundation for Tunisia's future liberties and prosperity, and a valued partner for the United States.
