Hurricane Dorian, the second-strongest Atlantic storm on record and the strongest to ever strike The Bahamas, made landfall on September 1, 2019 as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 180 mph. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) on September 2, 2019 to lead the U.S. Government's humanitarian response in coordination with the Government of Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Nearly $34 million

provided by the United States to help affected communities.

Critical Relief Supplies

USAID is providing more than 53 metric tons from our warehouse in Miami to help an estimated 54,000 people. This includes:

  • 700 Rolls of heavy-duty plastic sheeting to meet urgent shelter needs
  • 4,400 Buckets and water containers to provide safe drinking water
  • 1,600 Hygiene kits to prevent disease
  • 4 Chainsaw kits to help remove debris

USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team

At its peak, the DART included:

  • 42 USAID Disaster Experts
  • 64 Search and Rescue Professionals
  • 4 Canines
  • 50,000 Pounds of Inflatable Boats, Equipment, and Medical Supplies

Food Assistance

USAID helped to provide 14,000 ready-to-eat meals.

U.S. Military Assistance

U.S. military ships and helicopters supported USAID by transporting more than 147 metric tons of humanitarian cargo and 445 response staff.
