While each conflict has a unique regional, historical and cultural context, the characteristics of peace negotiations and the points of impasse between parties are often strikingly similar. For example, although the Sri Lanka, the former Yugoslavia and Darfur peace negotiations emphasized different conflict drivers—deprivation of human rights, the unequal allocation of or access to natural resources and political marginalization—they shared similar dynamics and contested issues.
