The Maiko-Tayna-Kahuzi-Biega landscape, one of the largest of CARPE’s nine landscapes, includes a cluster of three major protected areas in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering more than 10 million hectares – about the size of Virginia – the landscape extends from the mountainous east along the rim of the Albertine Rift near the borders of Rwanda and Burundi down to the flat lowlands near the Congo River more than 200 kilometers to the west and nearly 3,000 meters lower in elevation.
Ituri-Epulu-Aru, the northernmost landscape of USAID’s Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE) nine landscapes, is situated in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and spans a large portion of the upper basin of the Ituri River watershed. Covered by a dense network of streams and rivers, with gently rolling forested uplands climbing to savanna hills and the mountains of the Albertine Rift, the landscape contains some of the largest intact tracts of lowland rainforest in the Congo Basin.
Batéké-Leconi-Léfini is located in central Republic of Congo (ROC). It includes the imposing Massif Du Chaillu, a mosaic of ancient grasslands and deep valleys with gallery forests. This unique ecosystem is dominated by a collection of Congo River tributary watersheds and the Batéké plateau.
USAID is supporting Garamba National Park (GNP) in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Chinko Nature Reserve in eastern Central African Republic (CAR), in partnership with African Parks and the governments of DRC and CAR.
Lac Télé-Lac Tumba is the largest of the nine USAID-supported landscapes. More than 500 kilometers long and 250 kilometers wide, it straddles the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Congo (ROC). Situated in the alluvial plain of the vast Central Basin region of the Congo River watershed, it is one of the most biologically diverse wetlands in Africa.
