Today on World Food Day, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) reaffirms its commitment to fighting global hunger and promoting a future of food security for our rapidly growing world.

As the world's leading humanitarian donor, the United States provided more than $3 billion in Fiscal Year 2017 in humanitarian assistance to fight hunger and provide other life-saving assistance worldwide. Much of this assistance was focused in Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen, where conflict and instability are fueling severe food security crises. But even as we mobilize the best of American generosity to feed hungry people today, we are also leveraging resources to help countries prepare for future shocks and equip people with the tools to feed themselves.

Through initiatives like Feed the Future, USAID is investing in resilience, including innovations in agriculture to break the cycle of hunger and poverty that plagues much of the developing world. Investing in long-term solutions to global hunger reduces humanitarian need in the future, while bolstering America's own prosperity and security. The United States will continue to work with the international community, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to combat global hunger.
