OVERVIEW

The USAID’s Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) project in collaboration with National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Angola will implement the population-based health survey, entitled “ Inquérito de Indicadores Múltiplos e de Saúde” (IIMS)”. This will be the follow up to the 2015/2016 survey that the USAID funded (60 percent of total survey costs) with approximately $5.9 million as well as technical support from the U.S. Embassy health team. As a result, for the first time, Angola has reliable provincial-level data comparable to over 90 countries that implemented similar surveys and helped advance Angola’s ability to track progress toward its development goals.

DHS provides data for a wide range of monitoring and impact evaluation indicators in the areas of population, health, and nutrition. The US President's Malaria Initiative through USAID will invest $1.9 million in this population-based survey to bring to Angola the power of quality data for sustainable development.

As recognized “gold standard” in population and health research in developing countries, the DHS uses the best and most reliable survey methods available and utilizes sound data collection procedures with robust quality control mechanisms at every stage of survey implementation  

ACTIVITIES

The 2020 Demographic and Health Survey will be designed to provide data for monitoring the population and health situation in Angola. The objective of the 2020 IIMS is to provide current information with regard to the demographic and health situation of a national representative sample of women, men, and children, including fertility levels, marriage, sexual activity, fertility preferences, family planning methods, childhood and maternal mortality, maternal and child health, breastfeeding practices, nutrition, malaria, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and child wellbeing.
