Angola Flood Relief (pdf - 6 MB)
Duration: March 2015 – March 2018
Total Funding: $ 1.2 million
Heavy rains in March 2015 displaced approximately 10,000 people whose homes were washed away in the deluge, killing more than 100. Inresponse, the Ministry of Petroleum reached out to Association of Oil Exploration Companies in Angola (ACEPA) member companies for assistance. Twelve companies pooled a combined $1.2 million to support the development of a new community on safer ground, the 11 de Marco neighborhoods in Cabrais, Catumbela Municipality.
ACEPA partnered with USAID to implement the relief project. This public-private partnership use local resources to meet development needs. Through our combined support, Benguela government provides health care needs for residents of the new community and supports longer-term efforts to relocate people from high-risk areas to safer ground. Over 500 families were immediately relocated to the new neighborhoods, and the province plans for the development to grow to 500,000 people. The health center will be a cornerstone of the new development.
