Since 2007, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance has responded to more than 90 disasters in the LAC region, working in close coordination with host governments, disaster management agencies, as well as with the local and international community, to save lives.  USAID also supports  disaster risk reduction activities that help mitigate risk, prepare vulnerable communities for disasters, and reduce the social and economic impact of emergencies.  

USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance has a regional office in San José, Costa Rica, and a field office in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to ensure that disaster experts can rapidly deploy to disasters in the LAC region when needed.

Through its Regional Disaster Assistance Program, USAID also supports a regional network of disaster risk management specialists who coordinate technical assistance and training programs, and remain on standby during emergencies. In addition, USAID maintains an on-call roster of approximately 400 local surge consultants in 30 countries, who can be activated quickly when disaster strike.
