USAID is proud to partner with NATRIPAL, through the Philippine-American Fund, to strengthen your role in biodiversity conservation and environmental governance.

Biodiversity conservation and the well-being of indigenous peoples are closely intertwined. USAID engages closely with local communities to manage biodiversity in their own ancestral domains, which are often also protected areas. These efforts have resulted in more innovative, sustained and cost-effective ways to protect biodiversity.

Today’s launch of the Philippine pangolin research study is a fitting way to celebrate World Wildlife Day and the recently observed World Pangolin Day.

At USAID, we believe that conservation of our world’s natural resources is development. Similarly, combating wildlife trafficking is an international development issue because it fosters security and promotes rule of law. Drawing from decades of conservation work, USAID believes that responsible stewardship of our natural resources, including wildlife, is critical pursuing a sustainable path to development that enriches natural capital instead of depleting it.

This morning we're all talking about expanding access to affordable, reliable energy in Africa. Perhaps no continent and no sector is better positioned to leverage the combination of technological innovation and enterprise-driven development and what it can do to lift lives and build communities. And I'm confident that Power Africa is where these forces come together.

I am pleased that USAID, through the Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity or SURGE Project, has played a part in putting together and enhancing your Tourism Development Plan. I am optimistic that with everyone’s collaboration, the city and the business community will be able to exponentially grow its tourism sector, not only here in Puerto Princesa City but also in the surrounding areas.

USAID promotes and demonstrates democratic values abroad, and advances a free, peaceful and prosperous world. I bring you the greetings of the U.S. Ambassador, the Honorable Sung Kim.

The Philippines is one of the world’s 17 mega biodiverse countries, which together contain two-thirds of the earth’s biodiversity and up to 80 percent of the world’s plant and animal species. Billions of people around the world rely on forests, wildlife, and fisheries for their livelihoods. When we lose wildlife, we lose essential tools in our mutual goals to drive down poverty. This is why the U.S. government recognizes the essential role of biodiversity conservation in achieving our goal to help build prosperous, stable and equitable societies.

Under USAID’s Cambodia Countering Trafficking in Persons Program, Winrock International partnered with BBC Media Action to develop a program and to provide Training-of-Trainers workshops on soft skills development. The program improves the skills of workers with limited education so they can more successfully access the job market, better identify employment options, improve their communication skills, and build their confidence. This is an important part of our larger effort at countering human trafficking.

We are happy to see the great partnerships that have been formed during the project with the Royal Government of Cambodia, commercial brands, garment factories, and other key stakeholders in the garment sector, many of whom are here today. Today, we will discuss the findings of several research activities and an assessment of how the WorkerHealth project provided important family planning and reproductive health services to garment factory workers.

As Cambodia moves towards virtual elimination of HIV, it becomes ever more important to know what elements of the national program are producing the desired results and which elements require adjustment. Evaluating innovative approaches to programming and finding efficiencies take on heightened importance. This is where research and evaluation play critical roles. The USAID HIV Innovate and Evaluate Project did just that by providing relevant information to Cambodia's decision-makers at the policy, implementation, and community levels.
