People with disabilities need not be the most vulnerable members of society; the good work of physical rehabilitation can change their lives, making them productive members of their communities. USAID is proud of its support to civil society organizations in this sector.

The United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, recognizes rule of law as one of the key elements of the country’s pursuit of inclusive and resilient economic growth. In light of this, USAID and the Supreme Court of the Philippines launched the JUSTICE project in 2012 to improve judicial efficiency and integrity.

In the past two weeks, I had the pleasure of visiting a number of U.S. government-supported sites in Benguet and Iloilo City and witnessed firsthand the admirable work of our Philippines partners — health workers, disaster volunteers, fisherfolk leaders, and others — who are delivering basic services reach the most needy. Today, I am deeply honored to be among Philippine government leaders who are so well-positioned to ensure that needed funds continue to flow to support government initiatives that will enable all Filipinos to map a better future for themselves.

The United States government works closely with the Philippine government and our local partners in attaining our shared goal for advancing sustainable fisheries. We recognize that illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices put law-abiding fishers and seafood producers at a disadvantage. They also threaten global food security.

As we know, wildlife crime is pushing some of the world’s most iconic species toward extinction while driving a lucrative criminal industry that fuels instability in countries around the world. Wildlife crime is a critical threat to economic development. It undermines regional security, threatens legitimate economies, and undercuts our efforts to end extreme poverty. In Namibia, wildlife is an important cultural and economic asset, contributing significantly to the tourism sector and sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people.

I am delighted that USAID is a part of this important endeavor that features an integrated and multi-level approach to strengthening Cambodia’s education system. Famed philosopher Plato once said: “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life”. These words ring as true today as they did centuries ago.

We are all here today to recognize the work that has been done under the first two phases of CDPF and to mark its third and final phase. It is important this work continues to help the Ministry of Education ensure that Cambodian children receive the education they need to help prepare them for a bright future.

I am very pleased to join all of you today in celebrating the opening of the Lodwar Livestock Market.  I congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to bring this project to completion. A vibrant market system in northern Kenya helps the region in many ways: it spurs private sector investment, strengthens the resilience of pastoralists, and reduces the impact of climate-induced disasters such as drought and floods.  In recognition of its importance, the United States invested 38 million Kenyan shillings in the Lodwar Livestock Market to help upgrade its infrastructure and improve water access within the market so that buyers and sellers can focus on business.

On behalf of the American people, we value our close friendship with the people of the Pacific Islands region. The U.S. and the Solomon Islands share a friendship that is based on trust and mutual interests, with our long history of defense partnerships, commercial links, and people-to-people ties. Our partnership with the University of the South Pacific builds upon our strong ties as we together promote a prosperous and stable future for the people of this country.

Vanuatu has been at the forefront of advocating for sustainable development that addresses increasingly extreme weather events and disaster risks that we all face. At the regional, national, and local levels, your leaders have identified clear priorities to strengthen the resilience of your communities, and we are here today to demonstrate our support for those priorities.

Back in 2013, the U.S. government partnered with the Department of Health to implement three major family planning and maternal and child health projects: LuzonHealth, VisayasHealth, and MindanaoHealth.

Through these three projects, USAID has contributed over 4 billion pesos to address the problems associated with lack of access to family health services and teen pregnancy.
