More than five years ago, the United States Agency for International Development formed a partnership with the DENR to protect the Philippine forests. Today’s event celebrates the many milestones that we have achieved together through the B+WISER project.
I am here today to reaffirm the U.S. government’s commitment to our shared vision of advancing and sustaining inclusive and resilient growth in the Philippines.
To attain this goal, USAID is a close partner of the Philippine government in joint strategies that support the government’s 10-point socioeconomic agenda. Together, we invest in human capital development and use science, technology and innovation to bolster growth. The Inclusive Filipinnovation and Entrepreneurship Roadmap, earlier unveiled by Dr. Fita Aldaba, further specifies how these strategies can be used to transform this vision into a reality.
In my remarks I will explain why we are bullish on Nigeria’s Sustainable Development. I will discuss some of the salient challenges. I will share highlights of the US response through our advocacy and actions. Finally, I will suggest that there is a “special sauce” that will enrich Nigeria’s sustainable development menu.
Indeed, water is and will always be a vital natural resource that lives depend on, as well as a key input to economic growth. This is why USAID works to save lives and advance development through improvements in water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and through sound management and use of water for food security.
While the Philippines continues to make significant gains in expanding water access, more work remains to address the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather variations — such as prolonged droughts, sea level rise and intensifying typhoons.
The Pacific Island countries are at the forefront of advocating for sustainable development that addresses the increasing climate variabilities and disaster risks that we all face. At the regional, national, and local levels, you have all identified clear priorities to strengthen the resilience of your communities. I would like to start by commending you all for your leadership.
Resilient development requires that all sectors of the economy work together to prepare for the challenges ahead, including by strengthening infrastructure and social systems. We need an engaged, vibrant private sector to help promote sound development policies and practices that can reduce the impact of disasters and protect development gains. The U.S. government is pleased to work with you —our partners in Pacific governments, the private sector, and civil society — on this endeavor.
Through the leadership of the Honorable Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Bernard Haufiku, Namibia has made great strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS, establishing itself as a global leader. The recent NAMPHIA data are clear testimony to this great achievement – and indeed: Namibia is very close to reaching epidemic control and closer than ever to achieving an AIDS- free generation.
I am pleased to be here today to celebrate our partnership with the Samoa Umbrella for Non-governmental Organisations, or SUNGO, and launch the “Climate Change Adaptation Project Design and Management“ handbook that is a product of our partnership in support of our shared goal of building resilient communities in the region.
Over the past 20 years, HEF has grown from localized initiatives started by NGOs with donor support to a national, standardized system with increased funding and management responsibility from the Royal Government of Cambodia. These funds provide protection to the poor and vulnerable, allowing them access to healthcare services in almost all public health facilities in the country. USAID is proud to be one of the key partners in this process.
Energy security is a critical issue for the entire South Asian region. This is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, with collective economic growth expected to reach 6.9 percent in 2018. The region is also home to nearly one-fourth of the world’s population. Yet per capita energy consumption remains among the lowest in the world and far below the global average.
Few industries have the power to transform a country in the way that extraction does. The wealth that lies beneath our feet can power industries the world over and unlock massive amounts of capital. In the United States, the gold and oil rushes of the 19th century still resonate today. And just as in every country that has experienced that sort of dynamic, those effects have been positive and negative, and utterly transformative in ways that are almost beyond understanding. As Uganda prepares to deepen its development in the oil and gas sector and other extractives industries, it faces great opportunity and profound responsibility.
