Remarks

Our mission at USAID is to foster the journey to self-reliance. And, we know that private enterprise is the force that gets countries there. In terms of creating those opportunities, sustainable opportunities for those rising young Africans, nothing else comes close. That's why the Trump Administration's Prosper Africa matters. It's not a program; it's a new approach. A new framework. A framework that seeks to liberate and mobilize private enterprise. I believe it gives us an opportunity to double two-way trade and investment in the years ahead. Prosper Africa pulls together, harmonizes, and harnesses our foreign assistance tools in ways that will promote stability and good governance, and an enterprise-friendly, enabling environment. Prosper Africa is different because it is demand-driven and private-sector lead. It aligns the tools of our public sector to leverage the innovation, resources, knowledge, and networks of our private sector.

Remarks at USAID's LGBTI Pride Month Event from Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick

Remarks

From our perspective, even though the WHO has not declared a public health emergency, it is very clear to me that this is a development emergency. As we all know, a deadly virus has struck a region of Africa that was already besieged over the years by a number of failures -- failures in development, a failure of democracy, and a failure of governance. And, this is a combustible, deadly mix. And I think, going forward, a number of things will need to happen.

Today, USAID is hosting its annual LGBTI Pride Month event to celebrate the contributions of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) staff and stakeholders, as well as our efforts to help protect LGBTI people in developing countries from violence, discrimination, stigma, and criminalization.

Good afternoon, everyone. And first, please, Mr. Prime Minister, thank you so much for hosting us not just here, but your hospitality while we're here in Somalia. Today, is an important milestone in the partnership between the United States and Somalia. Just hours ago, I formally opened a new USAID Mission here in Mogadishu. This is the first USAID Mission in Somalia in nearly 30 years. This inauguration is not only a symbol of the strengthening ties between our two countries, but it is also a symbol of Somalia's progress.

Three cases of Ebola have been confirmed in Uganda, resulting in one death. This marks the first cases of the deadly disease outside of neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since the ongoing outbreak began in August 2018. USAID is monitoring the situation and will continue to work alongside partners to support the response in Uganda. USAID will also continue to help neighboring countries prepare for a potential outbreak and provide other critical assistance to help stop the spread of disease.

Statement

The Women, Peace, and Security Act, signed into law by President Trump in 2017, demonstrates the United States' commitment to addressing the challenges faced by women and girls in conflict- and disaster-affected areas around the world. Consistent with the President's National Security Strategy, which recognizes the critical link between women's empowerment and more peaceful, prosperous societies, the U.S. Strategy on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) will strengthen our efforts to advance women's leadership in preventing and resolving conflict, countering violent extremism, and supporting post-conflict recovery. This Strategy also complements other important efforts by the Administration to support the security and success of women around the world, including the recently announced Women's Global Development and Prosperity Initiative.
