Remarks

The United States and Bangladesh share a long history of partnership and cooperation and friendship. USAID has particularly deep roots in this country; in fact, over the last couple of days, several Bangladeshis with whom I've spoken have told me that they can recall the days some decades ago when they were receiving food aid with the USAID logo on it. Things have changed a little bit since then as Bangladesh has risen rapidly, now graduating from low-income status, something that is indeed to be celebrated. There is much to do, of course, and we will continue to work closely together, our governments, on a number of fronts. From global health to food security, from economic development to democratic governance, we are working together on so many fronts.

On Wednesday, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green met with M.D. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in Dhaka. Administrator Green thanked the Government of Bangladesh for generously hosting and assisting nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees who have fled violence and persecution in Burma since August 2017, and underscored the U.S. commitment to the humanitarian response to the crisis.

Remarks

As you all know, America and Bangladesh have been working together closely for some time on many fronts, from health to counterterrorism, to food security. Together we've dramatically reduced the maternal and child mortality and tripled the production of rice and achieved 6 percent annual GDP growth over the last decade. Our relationship is much more than a partnership, much more than lights. It is a friendship. That friendship is based upon the values that we share. And as the Ambassador just alluded, in my view, that friendship has never been more important. We are working together to address the Rohingya crisis. America truly admires the capacity that Bangladesh has shown in extending a welcome to this poor beleaguered people. As your Administrator, I admire the role that you have played in helping Dhaka to meet their most immediate needs. We all recognize that the long-term answer must soon be found, but right now, the very survival of these oppressed families depends upon the help and assistance that you are helping to deliver. So, on behalf of the United States of America, I salute all of you.

Remarks

So, first, the purpose of my visit is to learn. It was a chance for me to visit Cox's Bazar and to learn and see for myself, with my own eyes, and also to speak to people, both the Rohingya, as well, of course, Bangladesh's government but local leaders. In terms of this meeting, it's a chance to celebrate the partnership between Bangladesh and the United States -- all that has been achieved on so many fronts. And so that was the principal part of the conversation.

Ramadan is a time to reflect on the principles of commitment, compassion, justice, and service.  These principles also lie at the core of USAID's mission.  Our Agency is proud to partner with Muslim communities across the world to pursue a shared commitment to humanitarian service and the elevation of human dignity.

Remarks

Good afternoon. Standing here with here with U.S. Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, I'm proud to announce that USAID is providing $44 million in additional humanitarian assistance to support the relief efforts towards the Rohingya, both in Bangladesh and in Burma. The time that I have spent here in Bangladesh and in this camp reminds me, number one, of the terrible atrocities that the Rohingya have faced. But, number two, how the world community is coming together to support the good work of the Bangladesh Government in trying to provide some relief to these poor beleaguered people.

On behalf of the worldwide USAID team, I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mark Mitchell, an accomplished Foreign Service Officer who died in a tragic accident on Sunday in Georgia. USAID staff work around the world, often at risk to themselves, to promote a better future for all. His memory lives on in the lasting impact of his 25 years as a dedicated public servant. In addition to serving in the U.S. military, Mark faced some of the most challenging operating environments USAID officers confront worldwide, as he served in Djibouti and Afghanistan before taking up his post in Georgia. His passion for country, for service, and for improving the lives of those in need reached communities far and wide, and touched many here at home.

I join my U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) colleagues in congratulating the Office of Food for Peace and the USAID-led Power Africa initiative, both of which are finalists for the 2018 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal. These medals recognize an enduring commitment to breaking down barriers, overcoming obstacles, and achieving results.

Remarks

Thank you. Thank you, Chairman Rogers, Ranking Member Lowey, and members of the subcommittee. Thank you for this opportunity to summarize my written testimony. I would like to begin this morning by welcoming the nomination of Director Pompeo. I had the opportunity to initially discuss with him how development and diplomacy go hand-in-hand, and I very much look forward to working with him closely, should he be confirmed.

In the meantime, as many of you have alluded to, at USAID, we have urgent work to do. From unprecedented humanitarian challenges to exciting development opportunities, our work has never been more important. That has certainly been a clear takeaway from my travels over these last eight months.

25-04-2018

Today, on World Malaria Day, I reaffirm the commitment of the United States to ending malaria. Despite being preventable, malaria is a leading cause of sickness and death across much of sub-Saharan Africa. The disease disproportionately impacts the rural poor and traps families in a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.

On April 25, 2016, USAID employee Xulhaz Mannan was brutally murdered for his advocacy for human rights in Bangladesh. On the second anniversary of this tragedy, we reflect on Xulhaz's courage and conviction as a champion for human rights, non-discrimination, and inclusion. We also renew our call for the authorities in Bangladesh to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
