The goals of reducing gender inequality and promoting women's rights have been a priority of USAID and our partners – governments, donors, and civil society – for a long time. But despite the considerable investment so far to advance social justice and gender equality, women continue to be underrepresented in decision making bodies, not only in the private sector, at the local level and in civil society, but in the politics and government as well. The barriers that prevent women from effectively participating in civic life remain an issue for Cambodian women, who are often excluded from the more traditionally male-dominated spheres of political decision-making.
People with disabilities need not be the most vulnerable members of society; the good work of physical rehabilitation can change their lives, making them productive members of their communities. USAID is proud of its support to civil society organizations in this sector.
I am delighted that USAID is a part of this important endeavor that features an integrated and multi-level approach to strengthening Cambodia’s education system. Famed philosopher Plato once said: “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life”. These words ring as true today as they did centuries ago.
We are all here today to recognize the work that has been done under the first two phases of CDPF and to mark its third and final phase. It is important this work continues to help the Ministry of Education ensure that Cambodian children receive the education they need to help prepare them for a bright future.
Over the past 20 years, HEF has grown from localized initiatives started by NGOs with donor support to a national, standardized system with increased funding and management responsibility from the Royal Government of Cambodia. These funds provide protection to the poor and vulnerable, allowing them access to healthcare services in almost all public health facilities in the country. USAID is proud to be one of the key partners in this process.
Over five and a quarter years, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Supporting Forests and Biodiversity (USAID SFB) project delivered meaningful results that improved the conservation and governance of forest landscapes in Cambodia in order to mitigate climate change and conserve biodiversity.
