The United States announces an additional amount of nearly $125 million in humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of vulnerable Afghans inside Afghanistan, including internally displaced persons, conflict and flood-affected communities, and Afghan returnees. This brings the total U.S. funding in this fiscal year to the Afghan humanitarian response to nearly $190 million, including for Afghan refugees in the region.
The USAID Women’s Leadership Development (WLD) program builds the confidence of Afghanistan’s most talented young women to participate fully in society and become leaders in the public and private sectors. The program plans to recruit a total of 25,000 women with exceptional leadership potential and commitment to positive social change to enroll in one of two trainings: 1) Jawana 2) Royesh
Hadia Naimi is no stranger to hardship. She had always wanted to obtain an international post-graduate education but had to turn down three scholarship offers due to financial constraints. Hadia, who is from Badakhshan province in Afghanistan, was employed on an exciting project with GIZ, the German Development Agency in Afghanistan, when she chose to invest her time and energy in her personal growth. She applied for a USAID-sponsored education scholarship that offered extensive financial support. She was accepted, and Hadia quickly found her feet among new surroundings in India where she is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Amity University, New Delhi.
In rural eastern Afghanistan, home-based agricultural processing is a reliable means for widowed women to support their families. However, these women often operate in the shadow economy with inefficient methods of processing and absent food safety standards and protocols.
After graduating from Herat University, Elham Waiezi attended numerous interviews, but potential employers were hesitant to make her an offer with no previous work experience. Elham was the only woman in her family to pursue higher education. Most of her relatives were married, settled down, and had children right after school. Like many young women graduating school, she was under pressure to follow the same path. Elham has always been a hard worker and fiercely determined to obtain her Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Unfortunately, having no income, she had to put her dreams of getting a Master’s Degree aside and look for a job.
